    • Tags aid in searching. If a participant wants to find other waves that are tagged with “devlearn,” it may be more efficient to use that tag than to use Search.

      • There are quite a few waves that are very useful, run by users rather than by Google. Here are the ones that have become my favorites (you can find these by using Search from within Wave):

      • About Searching


        Make good use of the Search Cheat Sheet listed above. The search syntax in Wave is a bit arcane, or at least it seems so to me. Here are the terms I have been using most often, with a short explanation of each in parentheses:


        • with:public [keyword] (Finds public waves with that keyword in them, for example with:public Mobile Learning finds public waves that have Mobile Learning in the name or in the wave. Note that this also brings back waves that contain “Mobile, Alabama” – the Cheat Sheet explains the search operators that Wave uses, which are as arcane as the rest of the syntax.)
        • in:inbox (shows all the waves you are listening to)
        • by:me (all the waves I have contributed to)
        • by:[WAVid] (all the waves this person has contributed to)

    • When you first get your Wave account, any contacts in your Gmail address book who also have Wave accounts will automatically appear in your Contacts panel. (You must have a Gmail account to use Wave, by the way.) You can also add Wave users to your Contacts by searching for them, or by opening the “Manage Contacts” link and typing their WavID.
    • if you open the Inbox link in the Navigation panel, any and all waves in it will appear in the Search panel. The same is true if you open, for example, one of your folders.
    • The ellipsis at the end of the ribbon opens up a drop-down menu of other functions, such as moving a wave to a different Folder.

Martin recommends removing the collaboration and document management extension (Better remove that extension, 2009.11.24), while rmentink suggests Martin's comment is dis-informative and recommends that Martin (and others) "read the eula more carefully" (Please remove the above comment, 2009.11.24).

Earlier on, millm had suggested there was a Trojan in the code (Trojan --- Key Logger, 2008.12.04). Though rmentink disputed that suggestion promptly, at present the Open Office Extensions site indicates only one download, and none this week.

Slideshare defaults new Account Type from default!

Slideshare apparently added new Account Type options to improve users profiles. A drop down menu at the head of Personal Information pages offers choices of Default, Company, Event Organizer, and four more. That's all well and good, if one of the types fits you better than the default.

The problem is, on first login since Slideshare's update, I found a hot-linked organizational name glaring from the top corner of the display, which opened My Slidespace when I clicked on it. Though the slidespace then announced "Hello, [+ username]!" at the top right, the "Welcome back, ..." message in the sidebar to the left still displayed the organizational name.

The work around to get back to me required:
  1. Opening the user profile page for editing (Edit profile),
  2. Switching the Account Type to Default, and
  3. Saving the changes.
Talk about a make work proposition for users not seeking to usurp an entire organization's Slideshare identity! Why is it that web site builders seem to think they know better than users do what users' identities and preferences are?

Thanks for dropping by!

Though the chart below suggests that the number of visitors took a turn upward over the past few months, I'm at a loss to explain why. pab's potpourri has been on MyBlogLog for years, and I haven't pinged Technorati recently.

While I've embedded a few videos here and there, the main new development has been feeding Diigo bookmarks automatically into micro-posts. Are those what attracted extra attention to this potpourri? There is an aggregate feed from all my blogs on one or more of the others; maybe that's generating some cross-checking.
